For her martini, I used some infused vermouth - Vermouth de Provence that I had made before. His would be classic and her's would be a slight variation. This cocktail is a true iconic staple that wont go out of fashion any time soon. I didn't want to go to far from the classic with things like sour apple or pumpkin martini, but I did want to make His and Her Martinis. That all changed when he fell in love with them at the Dukes Hotel bar. ![]() There are two basic types of martinis: dry martinis and sweet vodka martinis. There are only so many ways to vary a martini because it is basically two ingredients, gin and vermouth. People have been enjoying martinis for about 100 years, so it has staying power. The name martini first appeared in The New and Improved Bartending Manual, published in 1888, so they've been around awhile! I always associate them with 50's and 60's coolness. Of course, The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook comes with a martini recipe and even gives a little history of the martini. It doesn't get much simpler or more classic than a martini. I wasn't sure what I would make, but I was leaning towards keeping it simple and classic, just like Mad Men. So, when Judy asked me what I was making, I didn't hesitate to say a cocktail. I love skinny ties, bouffant hairdos, and cocktail hours. I was born in the 50's (please don't do the math, just rest assured I am old) and grew up in the 60's. Wasn't it Groucho Marx who said, "I don't want to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member?" Well, I am so glad to be a member of this club! People who love Mad Men are my peeps. Yes, it is the final season of Mad Men!! We will not go gentle into that good night - no we will go out with a party!! A Virtual Mad Men Finale Party, that is! When I heard that Judy Gelman and Peter Zheutlin had written a cookbook, The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men (which I will review later!), and that not only had they written a fantastic cookbook, but they were hosting a Virtual Mad Men Party, I practically sprained a finger or two typing up a quick email to ask, beg, plead to join. What are we to do? Why, #PartyLikeAMadMan of course! I can think of no better way to party than with His and Her Martinis! On Apwe will begin our final farewell journey with them. ![]() On Jthe world was introduced to the offices of Sterling Cooper.
